Identify scheduling, capacity, material requisitioning and stock holding needs specific to the production of customised products.  Carried out if there is a high level of customisation, engineering changes or non-standard products which will affect the scheduling, capacity, material and stock holding needs (like a rough cut MPS or MRP for customised products) etc. 
Communicate to customers the parameters of the design details they must provide for product customisation.  Carried out when engineering activity is required following an order; the customer is informed of the details they must provide in order to allow the new engineering and design work to take place. 
Archive details of changed and customised products.  Carried out for traceability reasons and in case a particular end item is needed in the future. The BOMs, engineering designs and routings for products are stored. 
Monitor the performance of the engineering change control function.  Carried out to monitor Engineering Change Control and use to help reduce money wasted, production downtime, disruption to production, levels of replanning required etc. 
Maintain engineering change control history.  Carried out to record the full details of engineering changes (i.e. design change, change dates etc.). These records may be referenced for a number of different reasons, i.e. spares. 
Recommend the most appropriate engineering change implementation date (i.e. based on minimising the amount of obsolete stock).  The date of the planned change is held back until the costs associated with obsolete stock (that will result from the change) are minimised. 
Assess the feasibility of product customisation (i.e. with respect to aggregate capacity and technical capability etc.).  Carried out to check resources are available and the process is capable of performing the intended customisation. 
Assess the impact of the proposed engineering changes and implementation procedures.   
Calculate lead times and costs of customising products.  Carried out to help manage the process and aid financial control. Information collected pertaining to man hours used for redesign and replanning, planning lead times and costs etc. associated with the customisation can be used to predict costs and lead times for future customisations and engineering changes. 
Project manage engineering change orders as entities in their own right.  Use "project management" style methods (i.e. Gantt charts etc.) to manage the engineering change process from conception to release date. 
Monitor deviations between planned and actual costs and delivery performance of customised products.  Carried out to assess the performance of the customisation process and to check that the actual costs do not deviate greatly from the planned costs associated with the customisation activity. 
Modify existing manufacturing processes to support engineering changes.   
Monitor, control and circulate new / changed engineering drawings.   
Undertake a product standard cost simulation.  Carried out to estimate costs of the new product by using estimated costs for every item in the BOM rolled up to get the total costs for the product This helps to ensure that the effects of customisation and changes are accurately monitored.
