ERP Term Definition
Data accuracy  The percentage of records which are completely error free. 
Data collection  Process of gathering information, this can be done via terminals, can be done using, bar codes or operator keying etc. 
Database  Data stored in a mass storage device under the control of a software package called a database manager. 
Decision tree  A diagrammatic method of representing problems which involve decisions or choices at a number of nodes. 
Delivery performance  A measure of a supplier's ability to meet orders in full and on time. 
Demand management  The function of recognising all demands for products and services to support the marketplace. Facilitates the planning and use of resources for profitable business results. 
Demonstrated capacity  Proven capacity calculated from actual performance data, usually expressed as the average number of items produced multiplied by the standard hours per item. 
Dependent demand  Demand for lower level items resulting from the demand for other items at a higher level in the BOM structure (this demand is calculated not forecasted) 
Direct numerical control  A manufacturing system in which a number of machines are controlled by a supervisory computer through direct connection and in real time. 
Discounting procedure  The process of applying an allowance or deduction against the purchase price of an item for a buyer (usually when the buyer meets certain stipulated conditions). 
Dispatch list  A listing of manufacturing orders in priority sequence. It contains detailed information on priority, location, quantity, and the capacity requirements of the manufacturing order by operation. 
Distribution resource planning  Time phasing of demand from warehouses or distribution centres on the factory. 
Downtime  Time when a resource is scheduled for operation but is not producing for reasons such as maintenance, repair or setup. 
Due date  The date by which an operation should be completed. 

There are many factors that are deemed to be critical to the success of an ERP software implementation. Ensuring that you have gone through an effective ERP system selection process is one essential ingredient to success and other ingreients would be issues such as data accuracy (BOMs, inventory records, routings etc.) However, the 'softer' issues associated with ERP software implementation process are often ignored by companies attempting an ERP implementation often with disastrous consequences. Soft implementation issues include: the people in the organisation, their fears, motivation (or lack of it!), resistance to change and the prevailing culture within the organisation - all have their parts to play in the ERP implementation process.

Communication and overt committment to the ERP implementation project by senior management are crucial to ERP system implementation success. Similarly, adequate and timely education and training of key personnel helps to reduce fear, increase understanding and can be used to sway a critical mass of people to being behind the ERP implementation and working to make the implementation a success.
